ELLA HERMAN | All Grown Up

This project is inspired by the colorful imagery from my favorite childhood books. Since my freshman year at college I have gravitated towards photography depicting strong female characters, vintage fashion, and fictional narratives. In this project, I have styled fashion looks influenced by the clothing and color palette from each children’s book and have infused a more grown-up sensibility and seductive twist.

The young heroes in books like Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, and Where The Wild Things Are have their own unique and strong point of view that I admired as a child and appreciate even more as a young woman trying to find my own artistic voice. Pinkalicious loves pink so much that she wants her world to be entirely pink. Fancy Nancy loves dressing up and teaches her family that they should enjoy beautiful clothes no matter the occasion. And the boy in Where The Wild Things Are, a child who has limited agency in the real world, becomes king of the wild in his dreams. These characters have taught me the power of imagination, and the choice all women deserve when it comes to expressing themselves and how they interact with the world.
